Abstract :
This research aims at finding out firstly the most prominent causes of underachievement among the Yemeni learners in the English classrooms in Al-amana schools and secondly the techniques that teachers of English use to raise underachievers' level.
The study tries to answer two main questions, which are:
1- What are the main factors that cause underachievement in the English classrooms?
2- What are the techniques that teachers of English employ to raise underachievers' level?
The subjects of this study are six secondary schools selected randomly from Al-amana public schools.
This thesis consists of five main chapters.
The first chapter deals with the background information and the introductory remark concerning this study. It includes the research's problem, the significance of the study, the research's questions, limitations of the study and definition of the important terms.
Chapter two provides the theoretical background to the study where the researcher reviews what has been written about the field.
Chapter three discusses the methods and procedures that were followed to conduct such study. The data was collected through administrating two questionnaires and carrying out non-structured observations to the selected classes of the six selected schools.
Chapter four aims at analyzing the collected data by the questionnaires and the non-structured observations. It has been divided into two main sections. The first section presents descriptive and inferential analyses of the close-ended questionnaires. The second one aims to compare the teachers' responses to the second questionnaire with what has been really observed in the six selected classes.
Finally, the main findings and the researcher's suggestions and recommendations for further research are included in chapter five of this
study.
