الملخص :

يعتبر تشارلز ديكنز (1812ـ1870) أحد أعظم ُكتاب الأدب الإنجليزي عموماً, و يُعدّ أشهر روائي اجتماعي شهده القرن التاسع عشر , فقد برز من خلال العديد من أعماله الروائية كمصلح اجتماعي وناقدِ امتاز بنقده اللاذع لكثير من المشاكل الاجتماعية آنذاك وبهجومه الشديد للسلبيات التي نتجت عن الثورة الصناعية في بريطانيا في العهد الفيكتوري . ُتعد رائعته الأدبية (الآمال العظمية ) إحدى تلك الأعمال الروائية الاجتماعية التي استعرض فيها العديد من المشاكل الاجتماعية. ولعل أهم موضوع تسيّد هذه الرواية هو جشع الإنسان ولهثه وراء المال , وما للمال من تأثيرات سلبية على سلوكيات الإنسان في المجتمع الرأسمالي . فمن المعلوم أن الثورة الصناعية التي حدثت في منتصف القرن التاسع عشر كان لها أثراً كبيراً في جعل بريطانيا مجتمعاً رأسمالياً , استطاع فيه من يمتلك الكثير من المال أن ينال المكانة الرفيعة دون غيره في أوساط مجتمعه وقد عرفوا بسيدات وسادة هذا المجتمع , إلا أن الكثير من الناس في ذلك الوقت لم يكن لديهم المال الكافي ليصلوا إلى تلك المنزلة الاجتماعية الرفيعة . فالآلف من الناس الفقراء , كانوا يعيشون في المنازل الصغيرة القذرة حتى أنهم كانوا لا يمتلكون في بعض الأحيان مالاً لشراء قوت يومهم الضروري . الأمر الذي أدى إلى سيادة البطالة في أوساط هذه الفئة فتفشت الجريمة عند الكثير من الرجال والنساء والأطفال .
أدرك ديكنز وعرف جيداً ذلك الوضع المعيشي لأولئك الفقراء فصّور في معظم رواياته تلك الحالة المعيشية لهذه الطبقة وحياة البؤس التي كانوا يعيشونها . وتأسيساً على ذلك تتناول الدراسة الحالية تحليلاً نقدياً لواحدة من تلك الروايات لديكنز وهي

الآمال العظيمة ) والتي نُوقش فيها اهتمام وتركيز الكاتب على العواقب السلبية المترتبة على قوة تأثير المال في سلوكيات وحياة الأفراد في المجتمع الإنجليزي في العصر الفيكتوري , فتركز هذه الدراسة وبشكل رئيس على أحداث معينة لعب فيها المال دوراً حيوياً في حياة وسلوكيات الشخصيات الرئيسة للراوية . كما أنها اشتملت على تحليل دقيق لسلبيات تأثير قوة المال على السلوك الإنساني لهذه الشخصيات.
تبدأ هذه الدراسة باستعراض حياة ديكنز واتجاهه ككاتب اجتماعي وإبراز دوره كمصلح اجتماعي في مجتمعه من خلال نقده ومهاجمته لتلك الأوضاع التي ساد فيها عدم المساواة وغياب العدالة الاجتماعية , كما تهدف الدراسة إلى إبراز نجاح الكاتب في استخدام تجربته الواسعة من الحياة في كتابة رواياته , وذلك من خلال توظيفه لتقنيات روائية فريدة ساهم بها في تطوير فن الرواية في الأدب الإنجليزي. كما حاولت الدراسة طرح وجهة نظر الكاتب في تأثير قوة المال على سلوكيات الإنسان عموماً وعلى المجتمع الإنجليزي في عصر فيكتوريا على وجه الخصوص . ففي رواياته الأخيرة استعرض ديكنز بنجاح موضوع المال, حيث هاجم فيها طبقة النبلاء التي كانت مهتمة ومنذ اندلاع الثورة الصناعية بجمع أكبر قدر من المال وذلك باستغلالهم السيئ للمشردين والمضطهدين من الفقراء في جني المال.إن دراستنا الحالية تركز على عنوانها الرئيسي حيث تناقش أسلوب عرض ديكنز وتقديمه لموضوع المال وتأثيره على سلوك البشر في روايته الآمال العظيمة التي أظهر فيها الخطورة البالغة في تأثير قوة المال على سلوكيات البشر مصّوراً كافة أوجه الشر والانحطاط التي ُافتعلت في المجتمع الفيكتوري نتيجة للثورة الصناعية , فالعديد من شخصيات هذه الرواية تسعى بنهم ٍ وراء الحصول على المال الذي لعب دوراً أساسياً في إفساد حياتها . ففي ذلك الوقت كان الشغل الشاغل للناس هو السعي لهثاً وراء المال والحصول على المنزلة الرفيعة وما إلى ذلك . ونتيجة لهذا الوضع فقد تعامل الأغنياء مع الفقراء باحتقار مما سبب في إحداث فجوة كبيره بين هاتيتن الطبقتين وقد ناقشت هذه الدراسة هذا الوضع وبتحليل دقيق .
الجدير بالذكر أن ديكنز ومن خلال شخصياته الرئيسة لهذه الرواية وأحداثها يؤكد على أهمية المال وقيمته العظيمة في الحياة مدللاً بذلك على بطل الرواية ( Pip ) الذي استطاع من خلال المال أن يتلقّى التعليم المناسب وأن يكتسب معرفة بمجتمعه و أساليب العيش الراقية فيه. من جانب أخر نجد ديكنز ومن خلال نفس الشخصية يحذر من أن المال والمنزلة الرفيعة قد تعمل على إفساد المرء , حيث كان المال عاملاً رئيساً في حياة الوهم والكبر والغرور والقسوة وخداع النفس ... الخ التي عاش فيها بطل هذه الرواية بسبب المال , وبالتالي, فقد فشل في تحقيق آماله العظيمة التي استند في تحقيقها على امتلاك المال. كما تناقش الدراسة تأثير المال على الشخصيات الرئيسة الأخرى للرواية كالآنسة ( Havisham ) التي رغم ثرائها إلا أن المال لم يجلب لها السعادة , بل كان سبباً رئيساً في شقائها وتعاستها في الحياة , إضافة إلى شخصيات أخري مثل( Estella و Pumblechoo ( وغيرهم ممن لعب المال دور كبير في تغيير حياتهم .

هدف الدراسة :

إن الباحث ومن خلال هذه الدراسة يهدف إلى دراسة ظاهرة تتعلق بالمال, إذ أن المال بحد ذاته لا يعد امتلاكه شيئاً جيداً أو سيئاً للإنسان بل إن الحقيقة تكمن في نوايا وأغراض الناس الذين يستخدمونه سواء ً أكان ذلك الاستخدام جيداً أم سيء.
إن هذه الدراسة تعد دراسة نقدية تحليله تُظهر جوانب قوة المال في إفساد المجتمع والفرد علي حدٍ سواء من خلال تحليلنا لرواية ديكنز ( الآمال العظيمة ) . فعلى الرغم من أن هذه الدراسة تطرح وجهة نظر ديكنز الشخصية حول التأثيرات السلبية في قوة المال على سلوك الإنسان في المجتمع الإنجليزي في عصر فيكتوريا , إلا أن الباحث يرى أن مثل هذا الموضوع له أهميه ُمعاصرة كونه مرتبط بكافه المجتمعات والعصور, فمثل هذا الموضوع يُعدّ حقيقة ملموسة في حياتنا نشاهدها حتى في مجتمعاتنا العربية .

ABSTRACT

Charles Dickens ( 1812-1870) is generally regarded as one of the greatest writers in English Literature. He is hailed as the most popular social novelist of the 19th century. As a social critic, he has ruthlessly attacked many social problems of his time and the evils of Industrial Revolution in the Victorian England with a reformer’s vision throughout his novels. His masterpiece Great Expectations( 1860) is one of his (social) novels in which he has presented many social themes, but the governing theme of this novel may be regarded as man’s greed for wealth and the corrupting influence of money on the behaviour of human beings in a materialistic society.It is a well-known fact that England in the middle of the 19th century became a very wealthy nation due to the Industrial Revolution. People who had enough money could become significant part of the society. They were known as ladies and gentlemen. However, most people at that time did not have sufficient money to attain that special status. Thousands of poor people in
England lived in small, dirty houses and did not have enough money to eat. They had no work and many men, women and children became thieves and criminals. Dickens knew very well how the poor in England lived at that time and many of his novels are about such poor people and their miserable life.

The present study was carried out to examine and analyse Dickens’ Great Expectations critically by discussing how he had concentrated on the evil consequences of money-power on the behaviour and lives of the Victorian people. Its chief focus is directed on certain events in the novel in which money played a vital role on the major character’s lives. The evil influence of money-power on the human behaviour of the main characters of the novel has been analysed in depth in this study.

The study begins with a discussion and description of Dickens’ life and career as a social novelist, pointing out how he has attacked the inequalities and injustices of the Victorian England with a reformer’s vision. Furthermore, the study
aims to reveal how the novelist has successfully used his wide experience of life in writing his novels by developing unique techniques as his main contribution to the craft of fiction in English literature.
Besides, this study has tried to discuss the novelist’s views on the influence of money-power in general, and in the Victorian society in particular. Throughout his later novels Dickens has successfully presented the theme of money, attacking thereby the money-minded gentry of the time who made a great deal of money in the early stages of Industrial Revolution by exploiting the poor, the homeless, and the downtrodden.

Consequently, the current study focuses on the main statement of the thesis by discussing Dickens’ presentation of the theme of money and its influence on human behaviour in his Great Expectations. In it, Dickens has shown the grave danger of money-power and envisioned the decadent impersonal evil created by the Victorian society as a result of the Industrial Revolution. Several characters in the novel are motivated by an intense greed for money which usually acts as the major corrupting influence in their lives. People at that time were servile towards wealth, position and rank...etc, and the rich insolently behaved with the poor ruthlessly and this created a huge gap between the rich and the poor which the novel has discussed and described in detail. Dickens, through the major characters and incidents of this novel, has emphasized the great value and importance of money. The hero of the novel Pip could get only through money some kind of education to acquire knowledge of the world and learnt the manners of good society. On the other hand, Dickens had already warned that social position and wealth could make corrupting influence on man. Money becomes the chief motivation responsible for Pip’s living in a world of false make-believe, snobbishness, self-deception and restlessness, etc. And his great expectations finally come to nothing in respect of money being the only means to achieve prosperity in life. In addition to this, the study aims to discuss the influence of money-power on some major characters in the novel such as Miss Havisham, whose money brings her no happiness, but it becomes the major factor of her failure and frustration in life. Estella and Pumblechoock, besides some of the major characters show how money plays very important role in their lives and destiny.

Briefly speaking, the researcher’s aim is to examine the phenomenon of money which is neither good nor bad in itself, it is in fact the intent and purpose of the people who use money in a good way or a bad way. This study is a critical analysis of the major dimensions of money-power in corrupting the society and the individual with special reference to Dickens’ Great Expectations.

Although this study gives merely Dickens’ own view of the evil influence of money-power on human behaviour in relation to the Victorian England, nevertheless, to my mind, it appears that such a theme has a universal significance and is associated with all societies and all ages. It is however a fact of life that can be seen in our Arab society as well. This social concern of the writer is the main point
of my exploration in this modest study.
