RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FURTHER STUDY
This study is still open to further investigation. The researcher can extend this study to explore how postcolonial novelists depict mimicry and appropriation in their literary works. The researcher can apply this study to Mahfouz and Malouf’s literary works. The objective here is how the characterisations may be affected by the metropolitan culture and style of life by focusing on the mimicry and appropriation.
Furthermore, another study can investigate how the postcolonial novelists are affected by the metropolitan style of writing in their literary works. Postcolonial novelists sometimes write their literary works under the influence of mimicry and appropriation. The study will focus on the style of postcolonial novelists in their literary writings. Are the postcolonial novelists affected by the metropolitan culture? Do they use mimicry and appropriation in their style of writing? As an example, Mahfouz in Midaq Alley depicts Sheikh Darwish as bilingual who believes in the superiority of the metropolitan culture. He practises two languages.
However, Malouf portrays Gimmy in Remembering Babylon as a boy who repeats the words of the Aborigines in order to learn everything about their languages. Here, the study can compare between mimicry that aims to protect the person from the metropolitan domination, as what had happened with Gimmy, and the desire of the indigenous people to imitate the metropolitan style of life because they find it suitable for their self-interests. Likewise, the researcher can study the attitude of the indigenous people towards mimicry and appropriation. For Gimmy, he attempts to adopt the metropolitan power as the only alternative. Therefore, the study here will address the impact of the metropolitan power on the characterisations through mimicry and appropriation.
From another perspective, the researcher can extend the research to study the concepts of alienation and exile from different perspectives. He can evaluate alienation in different literary works and compare between the exile that is forced on the indigenous people and the exile that is the only alternative for the postcolonial people to protect themselves from metropolitan domination. Is exile for escape or resistance? Here, the researcher can examine this topic through Malouf's and Mahfouz’s literary works using different literary texts. Exile appears to be a weakness or an escape but exile is the beginning of armed resistance against the metropolitan power. In Malouf’s The Conversations at Curlow Creek, Carney resist to redress the balance of justice because the metropolitan power dominates the life of the indigenous people without paying attention to their rights to land and education. The researcher can expand the topic to include other literary works.
Another topic for further study can be the image of nationalism in postcolonial countries, such as how the indigenous people represent nationalism as depicted by the postcolonial novelists. Does nationalism always serve the interests of the indigenous people? If not, the researcher can evaluate the reasons by analysing the literary works of the postcolonial novelists. How do the postcolonial literary works depict nationalism? Through analysing and examination of the postcolonial texts, the researcher can make evaluation of nationalism. Do the postcolonial novelists depict postcolonial nationalism positively or negatively?
One of the other issues that would be a good topic for study is how to protect the indigenous identity from globalisation and hybridization, how the postcolonial novelists depict this issue. Is there real protection from globalisation in a world that is affected by new technology? The researcher reveals the means of metropolitan power to control the indigenous people through the literary works. For example, Mahfouz depicts that the indigenous people participate in one way or another to be assimilated by the culture of the metropolitan power. The poverty and the need of Midaq Alley’s people help in their assimilation. In addition, they have feeling of inferiority due to social values as well as the weakness of links among the members of the same society.
The mission of the researcher is to examine, through postcolonial texts, the reasons for reshaping of the indigenous identity. What are the roles of society and individuals in standing against the globalisation and hybridisation that would eradicate the indigenous values? The researcher needs to explore how to retain the indigenous identity as depicted in the literary works of postcolonial novelists. Is it possible to stop the tide of globalisation in an era known for technology and information? Here, the researcher would explore the postcolonial texts to find out if there is real protection for the indigenous identity.
Another issue that can be looked into is the attitude of the indigenous people towards hybridisation and globalisation. Do postcolonial countries see globalization as a danger to their culture or do they see it as a necessity in a world that has become controlled by the global powers? The study will answer such questions through analysing the postcolonial texts.
Moreover, racism is one of the issues that could be examined in Malouf’s Remembering Babylon and the Conversations at Curlow Creek. How do the indigenous people leave their influence on the centre through "interpolation"? Why do the indigenous people isolate themselves in postcolonial countries? Aborigines isolate themselves to keep their customs and cultures that come under threat or they are forced to leave their land. Thus, each title of this study could be broadened to be a thesis by itself. The researcher can argue the same titles by comparing two different literary works such as the lack of indigenous identity: between centre and periphery, hybridisation in different visions from postcolonial perspective and nationalism in the postcolonial countries
