معدل تقييم المستوى: 4 ![]() | الباحث: أ/ عناية أحمد حسين شرف الدين الدرجة العلمية: ماجستير تاريخ الإقرار: 2001م This study is an attempt to show that ,noun phrase , is a property common to both English and Arabic , based on the Chomeskyans ,point of view who see the study of languages as a means of exploring the human mind since languages are innate in human beings and are connected with their minds . This thesis consists of five chapter . Chapter I, is a discussion of the preliminaries needed for an adequatc description of noun phrases in English and Arabic . In this chapter , the researcher has pointed out that although there are a number of theoretical frameworks available in western linguistics for describing languages , it was decided mainly on ground of familiarity to choose the eclectic framework as used by Quirk et al (1985) .In this chapter ,the researcher has also pointed out that though the title of this thesis might create the mistaken notion that this research is intended to highlight mainly the differences between English and Arabic , the real aim of this thesis is to hsve a judiciously balanced approach and to consider the similarities , between the noun phrases in the tow languages neither any more or any less important than the differences . During the last few decades a great deal of attention has been paid in Western linguistics to the identification , validation ,and calibration of linguistic universals . This researcher is aware of the fact that it would be naïve to make any dependable observations about linguistic universals relatable to the structure and function of noun phrases merely , on the basis of any two languages . Certain useful observations which , are made , nevertheless , can be used by other research worker in the field as a basis of a hypothesis for a further research on linguistic universals relatable to the structure and function of noun phrases . Chapter II is a discussion of the number , the class and the function of the constituents of noun phrases in English . Chapter II is a discussion, with reference to the same eclectic framework, of the noun phrases in Arabic . Chapter IV is a contrastive study of the noun phrases as described in the preceding two chabters . Chapter V is attempt to summarize, highlight and inter-relate the observations made in the earlier chapters. These five chapters are followed by a bibliographical list of the books and articles consulted for the purpose of the research .
