A STUDY OF THE ADEQUACY OF ABDUALLAH YUSUF ALI'S TRANSLATION OF THE METAPHOR IN AL-BAQARA CHAPTER IN THE HOLY QUR'AN A Cognitive Approach A research submitted to the Department of English, Faculty of Languages, in fulfillment of the requirements for PhD degree in English Translation Studies Submitted by: Essam Hassan Naji Al-Mizjaji Feb, 2010 ABSTRACT : This study basically attempts to prove that besides being an aesthetic rhetorical trope or a figurative semiotic sign; metaphor has rather become a way of thinking (Baake 2003:190). This investigation comes through using the cognitive approach, which shows that cogno-cultural human experiences are encoded by the language as a means of recording human experience and how culture models and constrains this cognition. The cognitive approach, as the tool of this study, focuses on the method of transferring the metaphor done by Abdullah Yusuf Ali when he translated the potential meanings of The Holy Qur'an. This approach admits that metaphor reflects our way of thinking as well as it mirrors our cognitive conduct. Cognitive linguists, therefore, pervasively, regards metaphor as one, if not the most, essential component of our conceptualization system. Mapping a certain metaphor in our conventionalized and complicated linguistic system, as sketched in chapter five, implies functioning our instinct to investigate about the source of these culturally or universally conventionalized metaphors. When it comes to The Holy Qur'an and its metaphorical expressions involved in this study, the matter gets more serious, since it is believed to be the Word of God Who says in it to be revealed in a clear Arabic tongue. Moreover, this study attempts to say that; when translating these figurative expressions and due to the existence of discrepancies that cause a culture gap, the translator is expected to face several peculiar constraints that might hinder doing the translation satisfactorily. Ali has faced such constraints both; universal and cultural, and attempted to reflect the Qur'anic text as clear as he can. When mapping both domains; the source and the target, shown in chapter five, the study shows certain shortcomings that show the man-made translation of a supposedly perfect text especially when he attempted to transfer the overall cogno-cultural image and gestalt shown in those metaphors such as; Life as a Journey metaphor, Heart as a Container metaphor etc...
